The Passion façade of la Sagrada Familia is an awe inspiring sight. Eight and a half thousand letters, hand carved into imposing bronze doors, tell the story of the crucifixion of Christ from the Gospel of St. John. Every time the name of Jesus is carved it is raised higher than the other letters and picked out in gold.
I stood for quite some time before these doors, captured by their power and beauty, and as I did so something awesome happened; the shadow from the top half of the door fell above the name of Jesus and, for just a moment, a vehicle in the street cast a shadow beneath the name too. The name of Jesus stood out, illuminated in a shaft of light.
It was a memorable moment for me, because it visually portrayed an eternal truth; there is no other name by which we are saved, no other name that has power to heal, no other name as glorious, breathtaking or divine.
And there is salvation in no one else, for there is no other name under heaven given among men by which we must be saved.
– Acts 4:12
The new album from Hillsong Worship sets out to declare that message. ‘There is no other name,’ goes the chorus of the title track, ‘there is no other name, Jesus Christ our God‘. And a powerful truth is imprinted on the heart and the lips.
This isn’t an album review, nor is it any form of promotional or sponsored post. This is me exhorting you to buy this album and sing this song. Sing it in the car, belt it out in the shower, teach the words to your children and declare it aloud in worship in your church.
I don’t really understand music, I love it, but never have understood it. (I’m actually okay with that because there is great beauty in the mystery.) What I do understand, however, is that the bible teaches us repeatedly that the name of Jesus has immense power. We see the apostles go out and do great signs and wonders by the power of this name (Luke 10:17, Acts 4:30). We were washed, sanctified and justified in that name (1 Corinthians 6:11). We are told to bring petitions to God in His name (John 14:13) and the list could go on.
Therefore God has highly exalted him and bestowed on him the name that is above every name, so that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, in heaven and on earth and under the earth, and every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.
– Philippians 2:9-11
I’m passionate about this song being sung because I believe there is world changing power in declarations of eternal truth. In its beauty this song is speaking words of power over our circumstances, elevating Christ to the place He belongs in our lives, and reminding us just who it is that we serve.
I believe that as we, both as individual believers and the united global church, make this declaration we will see powerful things happen. We will see lives transformed, souls saved, the broken made whole. I believe this not because of the excellent production values, the fantastic cover art (check out the story behind how Times Square was illuminated with the name of Jesus here), or the gifted musicians, but because wherever the name of Jesus is lifted high, whenever the name of Jesus is glorified and made paramount, the impossible becomes possible and we see great things in our midst.
Truly, there is No Other Name.
