Jesus

Wounded

While I was in Paris last spring I had the pleasure of visiting the Musée d’Orsay to see a few exhibitions, including a retrospective of the work of Gustave Doré. One of the biggest pieces in the collection they were showing was his extravagant oil painting; Christ leaving the Praetorium. There, in the centre of the canvas, is a figure draped in the purest white; a halo offers a luminescent glow around a crown of thorns that seems to have barely left a scratch on the perfect hair it sits upon. The label may have said it was a painting of...

Hosanna…

February 7th 1964. Pan Am flight 101, from London to New York, touches down on the tarmac at John F. Kennedy Airport. Amongst the passengers on the flight are four lads from Liverpool, heading to the big apple to launch their music career in America, and in the terminal are thousands of screaming fans. How Would Jesus Vote?

‘We don’t do God,’ said Alistair Campbell, somewhat famously, cutting off a Vanity Fair interview with his then boss Tony Blair. It’s turned out to be one of his most memorable quotes from his tenure but the irony is, of course, that Prime Minister Blair was an active Christian who prayed into his decisions. At the same time politicians from both sides of the house will mention their own faith in God. And agitators will film videos where they point at the whole system and explain what Jesus would have said about it all. So where do we get any clarity?...

Lost in Wonder

There’s a sweeping trend online at the moment for sentimental stories; you know the kind? They usually whisk you off to a video; the title will tell you that you’re going to be amazed, your life will be changed, and you will be awestruck and filled with wonder as an unknown person wows the whole internet. And you’ll watch something sentimental for thirty seconds then get bored and go on with your day. Can I ask the question; have you ever been truly awestruck by what waited on the other side of the hyperlink? For me the effect of all of these things...

Peace Has Come

It had actually been a really good day up until that moment; not perhaps the perfect day, but its average was definitely high. The trains were all running late but by good fortune I managed to get on an alternate that would get me home earlier, so I dropped my bag and my bones onto the first seat I saw and sighed contentedly. It was around about this point that it happened. Someone acknowledged my existence. Not just a nod either, actual verbal recognition of my presence near them on the train. And they had children. The future flashed before my...
